XXXTentacion tragically passed yesterday at the age of 20. It was reported that he was shot in his car after leaving a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, FL. His loss has struck the community hard and it has resulted in many rappers reaching out to the community. Trippie Redd’s birthday was yesterday and as a good friend of X, he was deeply upset on his birthday.

Redd posted a few memories he had with X before the tragic events occurred. He was not the only one to pay respects through social media, Ski Mask the Slump God also had an Instagram live video of him crying because of the abrupt news. Today, Ski Mask posted one of XXXTentacion’s unfinished songs “BAD!”

This has been hard for the whole rap community and we hope that X is in a better place now. Rest in Peace.

The animosity between New York’s Pusha T and Toronto’s Drake did not start in 2018. Back in 2012 with the release of Pusha T’s  Exodus 23:1 Pusha called out rappers who were financially unstable with the lines “Contract all fucked up I guess that means you all fucked-up / You signed to one nigga that signed to another nigga / That’s signed to three niggas, now that’s bad luck.”. With Drake signed to Young Money who is also a subsidiary of Cash Money who is under universal records. Pusha T did not name drop anyone specifically but after a tweet from Lil Wayne,

it seems as though the conglomerate known as Young Money Entertainment took direct offense to this.

After several back and forths with Lil Wayne and a three-year lull, Pusha T dropped the H.G.T.V Freestyle in 2016 questioning the legitimacy of Drake’s involvement with his own songs, specifically his use of ghostwriters. 7It took less than a month for Drake to address this potential shot at him with the release of two Birds, One Stone which took aim at Kid Cudi but more importantly Pusha T, mocking him for his overuse of drug dealing material.

This brings us to a revived Drake and Pusha T beef. Pusha released his new 2018 album  DAYTONA with features the song Infrared, which continues the tradition of criticising Drake for using ghostwriters. Immediately after this Drake responds to this by releasing the DUPPY Freestyle on SoundCloud. The song includes lines like “What do you really think of the nigga that’s makin’ your beats? / I’ve done things for him I thought that he never would need / Father had to stretch his hands out and get it from me” and “I told you keep playin’ with my name / And I’ma let it ring on you like Virginia Williams”. Drake mocks Pusha T for using Kanye as a major producer for DAYTONA and his choice to marry and stay with his wife, Virginia Williams. Following the release of DUPPY, Drake sent out an invoice to G.O.O.D Music, Pusha T’s label, of 100,000 dollars for “Promotional assistance and career-reviving”.

It did not take long for Pusha T to come back with a diss track of his own which some have considered of being too harsh. The Story of Adidon.

Performed over the beat from The Story of OJ taken from Jay-Z’s most recent release 444, Pusha tells the story of Drake’s alleged son Adonis, and Drakes role, or lack thereof, in his life. While no one is up in arms about this allegation, the true controversy lies within the cover art for the record.

Drake in blackface for a song performed over this beat sends a clear message about how Pusha T truly sees Drake. This is echoed in his lyrics “You are hiding a child, let that boy come home / Deadbeat mothafucka playin’ border patrol” and “Adonis is your son / And he deserves more than an Adidas press run, that’s real / Love that baby, respect that girl / Forget she’s a pornstar, let her be your world”

While Drake has not released a response to the record itself, he has addressed the picture showing him in blackface

Pusha T did say this was going to be a surgical summer, implying that there is more to come from him regarding this beef.

Remarkably, Lil Gnar was able to combine his love for both into one single skateboarding fashion business venture he calls GNARCOTICS. Essentially, the brand offers comfortable and stylish clothing tailored towards skateboarders, including the signature look of camo-blended pants, and was founded by Lil Gnar himself in 2013. The man is quite a hard worker. For 3 years he managed the brand entirely by himself, including customer service aspects such as e-mails, packing and shipping, etc. And in an interview with HighSnobSociety, he mentioned that this took up so much of his time, he didn͛t have the chance to grow his music side of things until forming a deal with a distributor in L.A. to assist in handling demand from his GNARCOTICS brand. Now that he has more time, he͛s on to promoting his music as well. So look out for this up and coming multi-talented man, as you͛re likely to see him gain some recognition for one or more of his passions.
