HOW KEVIN GATES CHANGED RAP

HOW KEVIN GATES CHANGED RAP

Back in 2008, Kevin Gates was little more than an underground rapper with aspiring dreams of recognition and greatness, having just released his debut album Pick of Da Litter the previous year. Hailing from Baton Rouge Louisiana, he faced some already rising competition from the surrounding area, like Webbie and Lil Boosie. However, Gates never gave up even while facing legal troubles, and continued making his music for 4 more years until he saw a real breakthrough, when he signed to YMCMB after well-known star Lil Wayne noticed him. This move was the launch of Gates being noticed in a mainstream light. The year following, he released The Luca Brasi Story, which garnered the attention of many new fans.

Gate’s popularity began to skyrocket as he started to cement his own unique style and place in rap history. His song lyrics often reflect upon issues he personally faced, and range from violence and drugs, to more soft-hearted issues like his emotional insecurities, depression, and anxiety. These raw professions are what set him apart from the typical ‘sex, drugs, and money’ style that many cliché rappers tend to adopt. Folks like to hear about struggle, humility, and other relatable human traits that he exhibits in his music. By connecting with listeners on all these levels, Kevin Gates has been changing the rap game entirely. He’s added emotion and feeling back into it. And after the success of The Luca Brasi Story, he went on to release his next big project Islah. The record was delayed for some time due to business reasons, but when eventually released in 2016, it saw two songs going double platinum, with the record itself going platinum as well. Plus, his music hasn’t stopped there, and continues to be of influence as he releases new tracks, including 3 new ones this month. Who knows how big of a star he’ll be in the future?

DOES LIL UZI HAVE A DEEPER MEANING BEHIND THE SONG “MONEY LONGER”?

DOES LIL UZI HAVE A DEEPER MEANING BEHIND THE SONG “MONEY LONGER”?

Everyone knows the classic Uzi song “Money Longer” with the lyrics that paint a poetic picture of the effects of gaining a lot of money in a short amount of time.

Genius suggests that Lil Uzi has “no worries” like Lil Wayne when Uzi says “it do not matter.” But is it deeper than that? We think so. In the book “A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines, a man named Jefferson, an African American field worker, is accused of a crime he did not commit. The first thing Jefferson says to his aunt after getting in trouble is “it don’t matter” and during a jail visit, he repeats it to her because he believes there is nothing they can do to counteract the accusation based upon race. He is wrongfully convicted because he is black and the jurors cared more about race than justice and want to keep the minorities oppressed. Uzi has been known to reference different forms of entertainment so it would not be unthinkable this verse was placed in the song to make a statement and not just flex.

Ernest J. Gaines, the African American author was born as a sharecropper and the oldest of 12. He promotes freedom of ideas in many different forms especially for his ideas on how race effects society. He has won numerous awards for his thought-provoking literature on the topic, including the National Humanities Medal.

Genius is a good company who strives to provide backgrounds on all songs from contributors and occasionally the artists. But sometimes Genius does not pick up on very specific references unless it is extremely obvious, so on this occasion, it could have a deeper meaning that one of the contributors suggested.

Lil Uzi is a passionate person who is a great example of black excellence and through this simple line of saying, “It do not matter”, he could be portraying that his wealth and success could not be held down by the oppressive ties of society.

Since getting his first major cover story courtesy of Complex in 2013, Chance the Rapper has shot up in rap’s hierarchy, jetting to the upper echelon based on his talent, work ethic, and charisma. He became the first independent artist to win a Grammy and perform on Saturday Night Live. Then he became the face of campaigns for both Kit-Kat and Nike. And as a casual side venture, he’s also working to fix the inequalities in Chicago’s school systems.

Not bad for a soon-to-be 25-year-old.

As he continues work on the follow-up to 2016’s Coloring Book, Chance has been keeping himself relevant by appearing on other artist’s tracks, most recently on Cardi B’s debut album Invasion of Privacy. In the world of rap, an artist’s success can be measured, at least partially, by the quantity and quality of their guest appearances on others’ tracks. While we’re still waiting for the long-rumoured collaboration album between himself and Childish Gambino, Chance’s guest verse catalogue remains varied and deep, spanning across several genres with a wide range of artists.

He’s teamed up with megastars like Justin Bieber and Kanye West, but he’s also popped up on tracks with everybody from friends to childhood idols, bringing his own unique style and flair to each to further establish his own lane in popular music. He’s touched on everything from lost love to Gucci belt-assisted booty rubs, advocated against both drunk driving and Xanax usage, and taken time to twice mention his affinity for having just a mattress and no bed frame. He’s shown off varied flows, rhythms, contributions, and topic matters, but throughout it all, carried with him the same energy he’d bring to his own music.

Without further ado, here are the best Chance The Rapper features.
